Options for customizing layout of "Green image" in Visual Editor

Topics: Feature requests

I've submitted this as a feature request (http://compositec1.codeplex.com/workitem/810), but since its not a small fix it might need more discussing. And discussing in the Issue Tracker SUCKS (!!).... so i've posted it here as well for discussing.

When having a larger number of functions on page, in can be hard to distinguish them from one another, since they all look the same. Even the titles are the same, if you have a larger number of instances of the same function. There should be an option to define some way of styling this green image box, with icons or maybe even a method that can do some drawing itself on a Graphics-object. This way ie. a videoplayer-function can actually look like a videoplayer in the Visual Editor etc.

I may suggest an additional "feature" to the functions' green boxes, which may sound opposite to your idea :)

I would be good to have the box in two modes: Expanded and Collapsed.

  • A Collapsed box would occupy as little of the page's space as possible - with as minimum info on itself as possible to be still identifiable (e.g. just the function's name).
  • An Expanded box would be what it is now or what you suggested like a video-player etc.

The collapsed box would make content look less cluttered, easier to manage. This may be the default mode.

A standard +/- button in the corner of the box could make it expand / collapse.

The box should remember its mode.

Requiring that C1 Functions have 'distinctive iconography' could alleviate situations where users have a lot of functions stacked together on the same page, but I'd avoid adding this feature since it is solving a pretty uncommon issue (I wont even call it an issue) and it is not even guaranteed to do to. Developers have to come up with - perhaps even draw ind import - icons that are descriptive enough for end users, and that really isn't an easy task for some.

In general we try to avoid 'iconography soup' in Composite C1 and put emphasis on naming alone. In some situations very distinctive icons may be helpful, but I'd say that overall we are better of with only a few very distinctive icons, describing concepts rather than specifics.

Just choosing from a set of icons would be a huge improvement.
